Quit My Nose Meds, with surprising results...

Postby Lee Lee on Fri Nov 13, 2009 5:38 pm

I've been using Nasonex for 100 years. OK, maybe 3 years. Anyway..I was also doing the NeilMed sinus rinse every single night, along with some Ayrgel to top it off. This was all in an attempt to get my sinuses clear enough to strap on the mask and be able to breathe.
I developed a very nasty mouth condition- yeast..I assumed this was from taping every night and not getting oxygen in my mouth. It was a terrible thing...I couldn't eat anything with vinegar, not even ketchup without a stinging burning sensation, that would bring tears to my eyes!! Nothing would get rid of this infection..and the doctors tried, with all kinds of medicine.
I decided to NOT use my Nasonex one night. I also didn't rinse, or use the Ayrgel.
The very next day, the infection that I had for a year and a half started to go away.
It's been a week, and my tongue looks almost normal. I had read a post here about not using a Neti Pot, and how it disturbed the normal bacteria in the mouth.
I'm shocked..I thought I was doing great things for my sinuses all this time. I'm having some congestion issues, but I'll take that, in trade for getting rid of this infection.
Just something to consider.

What you may have been doing is re-infecting your self with the tools/medication you used. If you have an infection you have to get rid of the medication you used during that time otherwise you keep pumping the infection back in.
I would strongly suggest you sterilize your nasal rinse tools or get new ones for the day you need them (cold, flu, allergy season)

Good point. I will do that.
This was a fungal infection (yucky to think about) which happens when the normal balance of good and bad bacteria are out of whack. But I'm sure everything needs to be changed out anyway.

I use Nasonex almost every night - and the nights I don't use it I have trouble breathing as well. I have had no problems when I do use nasonex. I think the same could be said for nasacort and flonase.

Lee, in the old days when I worked for pediatricians, we called it "thrush". It was a fungus common in babies if bottles/nipples weren't sterilized properly among other things, if I remember correctly. Breast feeding was out of fashion at that time. Glad you're feeling better.
